In Columbia, voters have decided, (by less than 1%) to remain at war with the FARC. Columbia has been at war with the FARC since 1960. If the vote was passes, FARC agreed to leave the country, stop all ties to cocaine smuggling, as well as help locate and destroy all landmines. They have also agreed to apologize to the victims families.
It is hard to imagine living in a country that has been at war since the 1960s. I think what is boggling my mind is why they would not vote to end the war? 1%!!! 1%! That small number! That one precent is still holding back the country of Columbia. I just do not understand why you would want to live in a country with war. Why would you want your children to grown up in a country that is constantly at war?
I sure hope that Columbia figures out what to do, and they can end the war that has been going on for more than 50 years.

trying
I think most of us agree that class outside was awesome and I hope we can do that more often, especially as the weather gets better and better. I think it was perfect that we were talking about the environment as we were sitting outside enjoying the weather. Since Thursday after class, i have been making a conscious effort to pick up trash i see. I know i used to not even really pay attention at all. Random thought but, i feel like i am one of the few people who actually pick up after their dog and i really cant stand that most people don't. I seem to always be the one that steps on dog shit so yeah it's annoying. Pick up after your pets people :)
After class thursday, my phone was dead and i was so happy that it was. I actually enjoyed being outside and walking through campus and enjoying my surroundings. I wish more people would get off their phones and PAY ATTENTION. Of course i am guilty of having my headphones in, phone in hand, head down as i walk to class, ride the bus, etc. but Thursday made me just take a moment and realize i don't need to do that. Also, i have reusable HEB bags at home and i seriously ALWAYS forget to bring them when i go buy groceries but now i want to make sure i bring them everytime. Little things add up! Everyone needs a water bottle.. I wish people would stop buying plastic bottles :/ Sadly, i typed that as i have a plastic water bottle right beside me but that's only because i got it from work for free.. ha but forreal reusable water bottles are the best!
Now that we decided on topics for issue analysis (Syrian Refugees is ours) i am looking into things about refugees and i found this video. It is about a refugee exhibit that was created and it shows people what it is like to be forced out of your own homes. This is the case for as many as 65 million people around the world. Its very sad. But I found this interesting so i attached the link.

"Her mind exploded once again, confirming that the more she knew, the less she actually knew."
For real though. Especially since taking this class which, let's be real, none of us knew what it was about. I assumed it would be my least interesting class and what do you know it's my favorite. I've been feeling this push to be more aware and educated about the world around me, especially since this summer. And this class is just another confirmation that this stuff is real, and whether I realize it or not it affects me every day.
Speaking of environment, which we started in class on Thursday OUTSIDE in the lovely SUN and BREEZE, I feel this issue is (or should be) our most pressing issue as a society. We are running out of drinking water while sea levels rise because ice caps are melting because of global warming. Which I mentioned on Tuesday and hardly anyone had any input. That made me wonder, do you guys know what we're up against at this point in time? Start researching, my friends. It's scary. Marine life is also in serious danger. Whales, fish, birds, and other animals are washing ashore dead with bellies full of plastic garbage. Pipelines are bursting in the ocean and killing marine animals that we cannot survive without. The ocean is life. And we are literally killing it. People in China are having to buy bottled air. That's right, AIR, because the air in China is too polluted to breathe. And don't get me started on animal agriculture, because the mass consumption of meat is responsible for much of our water crisis, greenhouse gas emissions, and when you realize how many people all over the world are starving to death while we produce crops to feed to animals that we then torture and slaughter so some people can have a fucking steak that alone will blow your mind.
But we (the environmental optimists) feel there is still enough time to fix things to a certain extent that can postpone the catastrophic effects of our presence that are encroaching. We talked about this a little bit on Thursday--pick up trash, recycle, reduce waste, etc. And these are all super important things we need to do a lot more, but once you read No Impact Man, which I highly recommend, you're going to realize that we are in a cycle of environmental destruction and it's going to take an enormous collective effort to get ourselves back on the right track. I actually recommend getting your hands on as much literature about environmental conservation as you can. And if you've never heard of John Muir, get him in your life. The more you read, the more you'll realize that you know very little.

Nature / open carry
Having class outside was very peaceful and think that we should do it more often. I agree that we need to become more aware of how we affect the nature around us and become more educated on how we can help others become more aware. I try to always pick up trash where ever I am at, especially cans when I am floating the river. People on the river who are caught littering should be find, which means they would have to hire people to float the river during peak season.
Open carry has been a huge topic that has been talked about this year, with having this new law being passed. I do not agree on open carry at all, I understand that it can possible save some-ones life depending on if a situation was to accrue but I don't think it is truly necessary. I think this bill was kind of a waste of money and believe that we could have focused on a more important law that needed to be put into place.. It is upsetting that an Artist will cancel shows due to venues allowing open carry, this can really start hurting a business after awhile.

Environment
After our class on Thursday, I realized how oblivious to environmental issues I have been. I realized that I have been the person that just walks by trash and doesn't pick it up. I was never as bad as to leave my trash or liter behind but I realized not picking it up is just as bad. I hadn't been recycling at my apartment because there are only two small recycle bins and every single time I would try to put something in it, they were always already overflowing. I always thought it was just a little thing and really what difference could one person (me) recycling make? After our discussion Thursday I realized what a difference each person makes. It is sort of a domino effect because if one person doesn't recycle, they won't encourage their friends, roommates or even family to recycle either. My Mom always made a big deal about recycling when I lived at home and I always thought she was being dramatic. I know that sounds ridiculous but I am being honest about how ignorant to it all I was. She even would go as far as cleaning everything out to make sure it could be recycled. I realize now how much of an impact that can have and I really want to be more conscious about it. The little things really do add up and can make a difference.
The Columbian Conflict
People in Columbia are voting to accept a peace deal between the government and the rebels. This 52 year old conflict has killed 260000 people and injured more than six million. These numbers are quite alarming and it is beyond time for a change. For those who do not know The Farc rebels are the largest rebel group in Columbia. Their main founders were small farmers and land workers. They have 20,000 active fighters. The rebels will participate in elections in 2018, this could be a great step towards peace for Columbia.
Age is just a number
In Evansville, Indiana a 60 year old women gave birth to two twin boys. The couple had been using in vitro-fertilization for about a year before becoming pregnant. The women states that God told her it was time to have a baby and she was in shape and healthy so she didn't see why not to.
I just found this article interesting. I can't imagine what it would be like to have a baby at 60 years old, let alone twin boys. Hopefully the couple stays in good health and has help raising the twin boys.
The saying "It takes a village to raise a baby," may stand true in this case.
Age may only be a number, but anybody can agree that the older you get the less active and mobile you become. These twin boys have a lot of life ahead of them and I wish the best for their parents that they can keep up.
