I've been working in the restaurant business as a server for about four years now and still to this day it never surprises me how entitled people can be. You learn very quickly in the service industry that the customer is always right and even though it makes for a great business it sucks being treated like dirt by someone you don't know and who doesn't know you.
Sometimes I wish I could just point out to a customer that they are being ridiculously rude. I wouldn't even care if they chose not to tip me after that, but atleast I brought attention to their childish behavior.
As a server my job is simple...I serve others. That doesn't make me someone you can treat like a peasant or act as if you are so much better than me. If i'm doing a bad job at my job then I understand being frustrated. But when I'm doing a great job and you are rolling your eyes at me or acting frustrated by my existence is uncalled for. What makes you so much better than me? I'm just a college kid trying to pay my bills and put food on my table. And a majority of servers have families that depend on this income, or pay to go to school, or use serving to pay their bills. It's a real job and it should be treated as one.
Another side of this business is the people who are overly nice but then don't tip or tip way under what is required. Do I appreciate your kindness? Absolutely. Does it pay my bills? Not at all. Would you work for free? Probably not, so why should I?
This isn't a crazy big problem in the world today but it is an issue many people face on a day to day basis. And if you don't care about anything else i've written in this post just remember to tip your servers (preferably 20%), and be nice.
I've always heard that if you want to see someones true colors go to lunch with them. Go to lunch and see how they treat servers. So many people think that they can make themselves better than someone else. Are we not all human beings just trying to make it another day? We were born with nothing and we leave with nothing other than how we impacted and treated other people.
