Over the last couple of weeks, K. Stone has mentioned the competing concepts of individualism and communalism--where your mentality is either "me" or "us". Communalism is scarce in our country. We have developed this way of life that emphasizes the "I" instead of "we" and now, it looks like it may be coming back to bite us in the ass. We work hard to get ourselves where and what we want, and when we see others that need help, we often shy away from sacrificing anything for the greater good. I acknowledge that there are many people out there who make sacrifices for other people every day, but I cannot help but feel that if we as a society realized how much we could accomplish through small sacrifices, it could transform this country. I am very pro-socialist and admire other countries that have policies in place to enable all of its citizens to live comfortably. No one has more than another, yet everyone has enough. Everyone has healthcare, everyone has access to higher education (without being drowned in debt). Are these not two of the major points in the cycle of poverty we covered in class? Those are major things to be able to provide ALL of your citizens! So why can't our majestic-ass country figure this out??? Oh, because we are so hung up on paying taxes =l Listen people, taxes are important. Did you know that the some of the highest taxed countries are the happiest?! Yes. Everyone pays more in taxes so everyone is taken care of.
THAT is a community.
THAT is what we should be striving for.
Also, I realize that things rely heavily on those in charge of our tax money. And when we find out that our government is putting that money toward unnecessary projects it's super frustrating. Just another reason to be more educated and involved I guess!
